Hair loss can be frustrating, embarrassing and really damage self-confidence. Both men and women can experience hair loss at virtually at stage of life. If you are unhappy with your hair and have been dealing with hair loss, you may want to consider a hair transplant. This type of cosmetic surgery can be a long-term solution to hair loss with very predictable results.
Candidates for Hair Transplantation
While hair loss can be a major issue, not everyone is the right candidate for a hair transplant. If you are considering this procedure, please keep in mind that the following attributes make someone a good candidate:
- Ample amount of scalp area with growing hair.
- Hair located on the back and side of scalp for harvesting.
- Over the age of 40 and typically not under the age of 30.
- Patient is in good health and not currently using any type of tobacco product.
- Realistic anticipation of results
Risks & Benefits
Overall the risks of hair transplant surgery are very minimal. In fact, these small risks, which can be discussed with your surgeon are far outweighed by benefits that come along with having this procedure. For example, successful patients will have an improved appearance. In addition to looking better overall, you will also look younger and more youthful with a fuller head of hair. When you look better, you will also have increased self-esteem. Higher self-esteem can have positive impacts in every aspect of your life including at home and at work.
There is more than just one type of hair transplant procedure. You will work with your surgeon to determine which is best for you and the look you wish to achieve. On the most basic level all surgeries include removing small part of the patient’s scalp that have hair from locations like the back or sides of the head. From there, those sections are relocated to the areas of the scalp that are balding.
The Harvesting procedure allows surgeons to determine the best size of a donated area. For example, depending on how much of the scalp is balding, smaller or larger areas of the scalp may need to be moved. If there is just a small area that is balding, a very small patch of skin and hair can be harvested and transplanted.
Follicular Unit Transplantation is a more advanced procedure. It provides a more natural looking result and is used most often for hair transplants at the front of the scalp. Micrografts of hair are used in this type of surgery to replicate that grouping and patterns of hair. Once these Micrografts are successfully transplanted and healed, the hair will grow out in its new location naturally and normally.
Transplant density is crucial to a successful procedure. Small groups of hair can now be harvested and implanted to grow like normal. When the transplant is dense and the surgery is done correctly, you will be left with uniform hair that looks as if it is growing without any help or procedures.
Scalp Reduction Surgery
This type of surgery is used to remove bald sections of a patient’s scalp. When this bald piece is removed, the other parts of the scalp are sutured together to eliminate the bald spot. This surgery can be combined with micrografting to remove bald spots, cover scarring and fill parts of the scalp with natural looking hair. The most common candidates for this type of procedure include people who experience patterned baldness, burn-related loss of hair or alopecia.
On the other hand, scalp expansion is also a surgery provided by our team of surgeons. In this surgery, small tissue expanders are inserted underneath the scalp and inflated to stretch out the skin of the scalp. When scalp tissue with hair is expanded it can be removed and relocated or stretched to the desired bald area. Candidates for this procedure are those that have significant hair density in parts of the scalp as well as skin that is elastic and healthy.
Expected Results & Recovery
After the hair transplant has been completed, patients will have scabs around each relocated micrograft. It will take about one or two weeks for these scabs to heal and shed off of the scalp. The patient will experience stubble in the areas with newly transplanted scalp. In the weeks after the procedure, hair will begin to grow slowly. In the months after, hair will return to growing at a normal and natural rate.
It is not uncommon to need additional hair transplant procedures. Due to the complexity of the surgery, it could take multiple sessions and up to two years to see the expected results. Today’s hair transplant surgeries are much more advanced and have the ability to give natural looking, long lasting results.
