Tummy Tuck for Men
The very common tummy tuck procedure isn’t just for women. In fact, many men who have experienced significant weight loss often suffer from less elastic skin that sags or hangs down. A men’s tummy tuck can get rid of unwanted skin or deformities. As a result, patients will have an abdomen that is more firm, tight and looks more athletic.
There are also a variety of tummy tuck options available. While some are a complete and full tummy tuck, others are very minimal surgeries with small incisions.
Q: How Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Work?
First of all, tummy tuck surgery starts with liposuction. This technique is used around the abdomen to remove excess fat. The overall shape of the stomach and abdomen is improved and remaining unneeded skin is removed.
Please note that tummy tuck surgery should not be used as an alternative to diet and exercise. This procedure should be used when other options are not providing the intended result. For example, if there is a gathering of fat or skin in the stomach area that is stubborn and refuses to dissipate.
If you choose to undergo tummy tuck surgery, you will be put under general anesthesia or a targeted and more regional sedation. Incisions will be made where necessary but are always in areas that can be covered by some sort of shorts, underwear or swimwear. After fat is removed surgeons will also tighten the muscular and facial layers that are underneath the skin.
When a tummy tuck surgery goes as planning without any problems, patients are allowed to go home post-surgery, same day.
Q: Am I A Good Candidate?
The two most important things you must have to be a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery are good overall health and true-to-life expectations. In addition, the following attributes are important:
- You do not have excessive amount of fat to be removed
- Your skin is healthy
- You understand the risks and benefits of surgery
Q: Tummy Tuck Recovery
Most tummy tuck patients take seven to ten days off of work to recover from surgery. Rest is recommended for the first two to three days directly after returning home.
In the days after tummy tuck surgery has been completed you can expect some discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medicines can be used to control the pain and swelling. Discoloration is also a very common part of recovery. The skin will likely return to its normal coloration within two weeks. Ten days after surgery, all sutures will be removed. However, if your surgeon used dissolvable sutures, they will be absorbed into your body on their own without any need for surgical removal.
Exercising and any heavy lifting should be prevented in the three weeks after the procedure. Our surgeons also recommend wearing a support or compression garment in the two months after surgery to help with quick and correct healing.
Patients are expected to come back for visits with their surgeon in the following time frames:
- 2-3 days post-surgery
- 1 week after surgery
- 1 month after
- 3 months after
- 6 months after
- 1 full year after surgery has been completed
After the one-year check up visit, we encourage patients to come back every three to five years for follow-up.
Q: More Details About Tummy Tuck Surgery
Many patients are concerned about scars due to surgery. The size and length of the scar will depend on the size of the incision. Minimally invasive surgeries likely leave much smaller scars. Months after surgery most patients notice that scars start to fade and are less noticeable.
Another common question from male patients relates to the pain of the procedure. It is important to note that each person has a different tolerance for pain. We have found that most patients describe the pain as tolerable, but we can never exactly predict the pain a patient will feel. However, since muscles are not torn or cut during this surgery, the pain is usually less than a variety of other cosmetic procedures.
We would also like to address that before and after photographs will be taken. These are considered medical photos and are mandatory. These photographs allow our patients and surgeons to easily and accurately compare before and after the procedure.
Our staff and surgeons can address any other questions or concerns. We realize you will have a lot of questions before surgery and are happy to discuss any and all, providing the answers to the best of our knowledge.
